To celebrate the International Earth Day on April 22, 2017, JK School of Government, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta in cooperation with the Majelis Lingkungan Hidup (Environmental Board) of Muhammadiyah organized an event called Bersih Bumi (Clean the Earth) on Wednesay (04-19-2017) at Sepanjang Beach, Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta. Around 300 students of the Department of Government Studies participated in this event including the exchange students from Thammasat University and Khon Kaen University.
“Besides celebrating the Earth Day, this event aimed to educate and raise awareness among students of UMY to respect and care about their surrounding environment. The global warming and other ecological problems due to human’s activities have been alarming,” said Eko Priyo Purnomo, Ph.D as the initiator of this event when interviewed in IGOV room, UMY on Thursday (04-20-2017). The Bersih Bumi event was also conducted to reintroduce UMY and bring it closer to the people of Gunung Kidul and its surrounding area.
According to Eko, the event was started by a formal visit to the Dinas Lingkungan Hidup (Department of Environment) of Gunung Kidul. The visit was paid to learn on the development of Geology Park at Sewu Mount as an ecotourism destination in the region. The participants of the event also visited the Dinas Pariwisata (Department of Tourism) of Gunung Kidul to observe how the existing tourism destinations in Gunung Kidul may empower the local economy.
The event was closed by cleaning up Sepanjang Beach from scattered garbage. The participants also donated several trash bins for both organics and non-organics to be located on several strategic points at the beach. With the strategically located trash bins, it is a good hope that the visitors will have awareness to throw their garbage in its place and avoid littering.
