Jusuf Kalla School of Government (JKSG) in collaboration with the Islamic Political Doctoral Program (PI), again held a national seminar entitled “Muhammadiyah, Islam and Nationality” which took place in the Postgraduate Amphitheater Room of the University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), (Tuesday, February 26, 2019)
On the sidelines of his remarks when opening the event Dr. Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto, MP as the Rector of UMY said that this event was one of the historical awareness efforts for the younger generation of society and the nation in looking at the future of national civilization by not forgetting the past. History cannot silence the enthusiasm of Muhammadiyah cadres in their struggle in the path of Indonesian history.
In addition, according to Gunawan, the role of Muhammadiyah’s leaders is rarely elevated to the public surface space, so the presence of this event is able to provide a stimulus for the rise of dialogue spirit of Muhammadiyah figures including KH. Djarnawi Hadikusumo.
Gunawan also asserted that “The role of the central Muhammadiyah leaders in the struggle for the national context is balanced with dialogue between national figures. So this chain should not be interrupted, the chain of historical facts and the Muhammadiyah leaders’ reasoning must continue to spread within Muhammadiyah cadres so that they cannot be stopped”.
Not only Gunawan, the event which began at 09.30-11.30 WIB in the morning, was also attended by a number of Muhammadiyah and Aisyiah figures as well as speakers at this event including Prof. Dr. Ahmad Syafii Ma’arif, former foster student of Djarnawi Hadikusmo in Mu’alimin, also as General Chairperson of PP Muhammadiyah for the period 1998-2005. Then Prof. Dr. Siti Chamamah Soeratno Chairperson of PP Aisyiyah 2005-2010 and Dr. H. M. Busyro Muqoddas, M. Hum who is also a former Chairperson of PP Muhammadiyah.
The speakers emphasized that since 1912 Muhammadiyah had been present for the nation. In its journey to date Muhammadiyah has remained steadfast in its position to become a large Community Organization in Indonesia, until now there have been many influential figures in Indonesia born from the Muhammadiyah’s womb. University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) as one of the leading Muhammadiyah campuses, does not want to forget the history of the Muhammadiyah hero. In fact, these figures must be introduced to Muhammadiyah cadres, the only UMY students.
