Tuesday (17/05) afternoon, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) reached an academic collaboration with Hannover Medical School in Germany. The collaboration was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the Chancellor of UMY and the Executive Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Hannover Medical School at AR Fakhruddin B Building, 5th floor of UMY, in the presence of Professor Achmad Nurmani, M.Sc as Vice Chancellor V for Cooperation and International and director of the Jusuf Kalla School of Government.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto, MP, IPM., Chancellor of UMY, fully endorses the collaborative initiative between UMY and Hannover Medical School. According to him, this collaboration can increase academic community knowledge, particularly in health research. “I appreciate the collaboration. UMY is one of 174 universities from Muhammadiyah, which was founded by KH Ahmad Dahlan, and is involved in both health and education. Now, we attempt to combine the two. This collaboration is also a positive step and an excellent opportunity for us to learn more about health research, as he explained.

Prof. Dr. med. Jorg Haier, LL.,M., Executive Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Hannover, stated with great pride that this was the next step in a long-term collaboration. “The good news is that we received a research grant from the German government just last week. Therefore, for the next 18 months, we will participate in this program together. Again, thank you for this wonderful opportunity to be here.”

In the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), a number of successful implementations have been, are being, and will be implemented. “We have had discussions with other faculties, such as the Faculty of Law, in order to collaborate with them. In addition, we have had intense discussions with our nursing school. And interactions and collaborations will occur in nursing education,” added Jorg Haider.

The Head of International and Cooperation (LKI) at UMY, Fitri Arofiati, S.Kep., Ns., MAN, Ph.D., emphasized that collaboration between the two can also be implemented in developing several other related fields that can be carried out in conjunction with health. Not only with the Faculty of Health, but also with other faculties. Such as the Faculty of Engineering with medical equipment, the Faculty of Economics with regards to management, the Faculty of Religion with regards to the implementation of AIK from a health standpoint, and the Faculty of Law with regards to health law or medical law,” he said in an interview following the event.

According to him, UMY’s partnership with Hannover is mutually beneficial. “In the future, Hannover will be able to advance its knowledge because we can become both research partners and research participants.” As for our own benefits, we can develop and innovate the conducted research to make it more beneficial for Indonesia. Naturally, it is very profitable for UMY, as Germany is a developed nation,” he explained.

It is hoped that this collaboration, which will continue for the next five years, will produce more diverse actual implementations in the future. He concluded, “Hopefully, there will be more implementations that can be modified, so that in the future the MOU is not just a formality, but rather there are activities that we carry out and modify.” (NSN)
