International Conference: Magnifying Democracy and Sustainable Development Toward Resilient Governance in the Virtual State

Yogyakarta, August 10, 2023 – The endeavor to establish robust governance in the digital era took center stage at the 4th Journal of Government and Politics – International Conference, held on Thursday, August 10, 2023. The event, “Magnifying Democracy and Sustainable Development Toward Resilient Governance in the Virtual State,” was organized at the Amphitheater of UMY’s Graduate School.

With participants from Asia and Europe, including Indonesia, Taiwan, Pakistan, India, Thailand, and Hungary, the conference converged ideas, experiences, and research findings. A total of 69 papers were presented during the event, each addressing diverse aspects of governance, politics, democracy, and sustainable development in the rapidly evolving virtual world.

The opening of the conference was highlighted by two keynote speeches delivered by prominent experts in academia and governance. Professor Dr. Ward Berenschot from the University of Amsterdam shared insights from his research on “Democracy Against Governance in Indonesia: How to Stop Money Politics.” On the other hand, Ismail Pahmi, Ph.D., representing the Universitas Islam Indonesia, provided valuable perspectives on “Democracy in the Society of Industry 4.0.”

The conference was a result of collaboration between UMY’s Department of Government Affairs and Administration, the Master of Government Affairs and Administration program, the Doctoral Program of Government Affairs and Administration, and several esteemed partners, including the Asia Pacific Society of Public Affairs (APSPA), the Indonesian Unity of Department of Government Studies (KAPSIPI), the Association of Government Studies of Muhammadiyah Universities (AIPPTM), and the Jusuf Kalla School of Government (JKSG).

Conference participants engaged in discussions and presentations that revolved around various topics, including the role of digital technology in shaping governance, the challenges and opportunities in the virtual state, and the integration of sustainable development principles into government policies.

Awang Darumurti, S.IP., M.Si, the head of the organizing committee, expressed his satisfaction with the conference’s outcomes. “The 4th Journal of Government and Politics – International Conference has successfully provided a platform for academics, researchers, and practitioners to exchange thoughts on critical issues related to governance and democracy in the virtual era. The diversity of perspectives presented has enriched our understanding and paved the way for innovative solutions.”

As the conference came to a close, the event left a lasting impression as a significant gathering that not only facilitated scholarly discourse but also fostered meaningful connections between experts and practitioners from different parts of the world. The insights generated from this conference are anticipated to contribute to the ongoing dialogue about how societies can navigate the complexities of governance and sustainable development in an increasingly interconnected and digital world.
