LRI UMY and Ministry of Education and Culture Research and Technology Collaborate to Hold Patent Description Writing Training

In research work, a patent is very important related to the rights owned by an invention and to protect it from unauthorized use. Realizing this, the Research and Innovation Institute (LRI) Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) collaborates with the Directorate of Research, Technology and Community Service and the Directorate General of Higher Education, Research and Technology of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbud Ristek). ) held a Training on Writing a Patent Application Description from Wednesday (10/08) to Friday (12/08). The training plan, which was held offline (outside the network), was held at the Harper Malioboro Hotel and was attended by 50 participants. Head of LRI UMY, Prof. Dr. Dyah Mutiarin, S.IP., M.Sc., in his speech, explained that patents are one of the most important intellectual properties because they become a reference for how many researchers can downstream new research results. “In this case, we realize that patents require special skills; we realize that the guidelines for writing patents must be understood as well as possible. Managing a patent is not like producing an article; maybe if we write an article in three months, we can produce one article, but in writing a patent, many things must be done in detail, “he added.

In line with what Dyah said, the Sub-Coordinator of the Intellectual Property Facilitator of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Muhammad Husni Thamrin, explained that patents are very valuable to the intellectuaoperty. According to Husni, ideally, a patent is commercialization so that the intellectual property rights of researchers can be beneficial for researchers personally and universities. Husni added that the training, which will run in eight cities in Indonesia, is expected to produce a description of the patents that will be registered and financed. “This year, we hope to capture 500 intellectual property patent applications from all universities in Indonesia,” he said.

Furthermore, the Chancellor of UMY, Prof. Dr. Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto, MP., IPM., revealed that a patent is an achievement of a higher education institution that is recognized as part of academic performance in the context of universities participating in solving problems that exist in society. During the pandemic, there were quite a several patents proseveraliversities in Indonesia. This is a matter of pride in itself. “The duties and burdens of lecturers are getting heavier daily; the community’s hope is not only in the learning process. But also in the products produced that can be useful in the community,” he added.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. H. Mundzirin Yusuf, M.Sc., representing the Head of the UMY Daily Development Board (BPH), revealed that researchers and lecturers could easily obtain patent rights through this training in writing patent descriptions. “We as the leaders of UMY express our gratitude to LRI UMY for holding this training, especially to the Ministry of Education and Culture, Research and Technology for its cooperation with LRI UMY,” he concluded.
